Night time adventure

You young moms expect to get up during the night with your little ones. I thought I'd share with you what my "little one" did to me last night. I got up to go to the bathroom and I could smell TPN. I never smell TPN when it is running in. My plan was to take care of business and then check out the TPN. Then I noticed drops of blood on my floor. My brain wasn't working too well but I was beginning to figure out what the problem was. The end of my IV line has a replaceable end cap. The end cap had worked itself loose from my iv line but was still attached to my line infusing in. I saw the TPN puddleing on the floor but what about the blood? I lifted up my red pajamas and saw that I had a pretty good soaking of blood. When the iv line has nothing connected to it, it has nothing to stop the blood from returning up through it. It was not pouring out, just a slow, steady drip. My troubleshooting skills were a bit slow, but I did get both lines clamped. Then I got a new end cap and alcohol swabs. I was able to get humpty-dumpty put back together again. I'm sure Jami and Sharon are more careful than I am so those kind of things don't happen to them.

I apologize if you don't understand what I am trying to say, but let me just put it this way. My connection came apart and fluid was coming out of both ends. And I had messes to clean up. Now I am just hoping that I scared off all those nasty bugs that were lurking aroung so I don't get a line infection.

Aunt Sybil ---- Unbelievable

This isn't the preferred way to break this news to folks but it is kinda how I got it and I hope it helps more people get this info quicker.

I received an email from George Hill tonight that Aunt Sybil died last night. That is totally all that I know. I would assume that the funeral would be Sat. But that is just a guess from someone who totally knows nothing. They were the closest couple that I have ever known personally. They were an example of such love and compassion for each other. They were the perfect example of synergy. And obviously one could not survive without the other. And from what I saw, they each dedicated their life to helping out the other. I didn't guess Aunt Sybil would make it very long without Uncle Fred, but I certainly didn't expect it to happen so quickly. I am happy for both of them.

I will keep you posted.

Uncle Fred

A few people told me some things that were said at Uncle Fred's funeral. This is my take on the things that they told me. I hope I got things more right than wrong. Everything I am writing is based on fact.

The funeral service for Fred James Hadley was held Feb 16, 2009 in Downey, Idaho.

Sunday --Feb 8 Uncle Fred wasn’t feeling well. I believe he had slipped on the ice and fallen.

Monday -- He went to the doctor where some testing was done and advanced bone cancer was found. He spent the night in the hospital.

Tuesday -- Uncle Fred’s grandchildren visited. They had a nice visit and he was able to give them counsel and advice. Then he sent the kids home because he was tired. After they left he tried to convince the nurses that he needed to go home also so he could go to bed. They told him that he had to stay in the hospital.

Wednesday -- Uncle Fred left the hospital and was taken to Diane’s home in Chubbuck. I’m not sure if this happened in the hospital or at Diane’s but the veil was very thin and Uncle Fred was visited by his dad, both his mothers, all his siblings, his son Dennis and his grandson Curtis (both of them have been dead for more than 25 years). He had conversations with all the mentioned people. (What a joyous time it would be as the entire family was finally reunited after 86 years.)

After Uncle Fred got settled in Diane’s home, he and Aunt Sybil sat side by side holding hands and had a nice visit all afternoon. In the evening, Uncle Fred told Aunt Sybil good bye and that he would see her when she reaches the other side. Then he coughed a couple of times and peacefully died.

Uncle Fred’s bishop is Diane’s age and has lived most of his life in Downey so he knew Uncle Fred well. He said that he visited with Uncle Fred in the hospital and the nurse had Uncle Fred walking with a walker. The nurse told Diane or Diane’s daughter that they needed to pay close attention so they could help Uncle Fred walk after he left the hospital. Uncle Fred said “How are they going to help me? I can walk better than them.” He always had a good sense of humor.

Diane wanted to have a surprise reception in honor of her parents’ 75th wedding anniversary. But she wanted to invite all of their ward members. She asked the bishop to announce it over the pulpit the Sunday before the event. Uncle Fred and Aunt Sybil were sitting on the back row of the chapel (as they always do). After Sacrament meeting Uncle Fred went up to the bishop and told him that he would not be able to attend the open house that he had announced. He said that Diane had told him not to schedule anything for that day because she had something planned for them. Once again this was an example of his sense of humor.

Uncle Fred treated this anniversary celebration as a big going away party. He thoroughly enjoyed himself and visiting with so many friends and family members. It was said that this is as close as one could get to attending their own funeral.

Many years ago after Uncle Fred had his heart attack, he was forced to sell his farm. However this did not stop him from farming. He would go to other people’s farms and help them with their farm work.

He loved to go out and get fire wood. Even though he had a large pile of wood in his back yard he would still go get more wood and give it to the widows in the ward. Some times people would stop at his house and say that they noticed his big pile of fire wood and ask if it was for sale. He said, “Sure I’ll sale some to you.” That would make his day because that meant that he would have to go get more fire wood.

For many, many years Uncle Fred and Aunt Sybil have taken it upon themselves to provide the bread for the sacrament in their ward. Every Sunday, Uncle Fred would leave the bread in the chapel and then poke his head in the bishop’s office and let him know that the bread was here. On the few occasions that Uncle Fred was not going to be at church, he always arranged to have someone else get the bread. (In fact, a couple of days after Uncle Fred died, Diane called the bishop to remind him that he needed to make arrangements for the sacrament bread.)

In hindsight several people noticed that Uncle Fred knew his days on this earth would soon come to an end and he was preparing himself for that day. He showed one man a picture and asked him if he knew who that was. The man replied, “No”. Uncle Fred proceeded to tell him that it was his mother and he had not seen her for something like 84 years. His mother died days before he turned 10 years old. He had 2 younger brothers and 2 younger sisters. People were concerned about how his dad would be able to care for all these young children. Different people began offering to take one of his children to raise in their home. His father insisted on keeping his children together in his home. Even at the young age of 10, Uncle Fred “stepped up” and took on as much responsibility for the care of his siblings as he could. He also worked hard to help his dad with the farm work. I know that this made the death of his sister, Margaret, even more difficult for him. He saw so many similarities with his own life.

Uncle Fred had the highest regard for his step mother, Ercil Morrison. She married his dad about a year or so after Lillie Fisher, his mother, died. Uncle Fred always referred to his step mother as mother. He never said step mother. In fact when he was speaking about his mother, I would sometimes have to ask him which mother he was talking about. They were both treated alike. He also treated his half brother and half sister as his other siblings. He never referred to them as his half brother or half sister. He frequently said, “There may have been a mother as good as my mother, but there never was one better.” This was referring to his step mother, Ercil.

I need to make a slight correction to my mother’s history. I told the story that dad called Uncle Fred and asked him if he could pick up his dad and drive him to Elwood to see mom before she died. Uncle Fred asked how soon he needed to go. He said that a huge snow storm was coming in and he needed to stay and drive the snow plow to keep the pass by Malad open. It wasn’t that Uncle Fred didn’t want to drive in the bad snow storm, it was that he wanted to work to make things better for others.

And all I have to add is what a sweetheart he always was. I have never known any couple to be closer to each other as was Uncle Fred and Aunt Sybil. I know that Aunt Sybil will really have a difficult time without him. But she will be living with Diane and Diane will take great care of her.
I hope reading these things will help you become better acquainted with Uncle Fred as it did me.

I have some photos that I will share in another post.

This and That

I am home again. Did you notice that once I got home my messages ended? I got home Wed afternoon and plastered myself to the couch for a couple of days. I think I am mostly recovered now.

I was visiting with Jami tonight (on the phone). She is helping me with my new house. She said if I want a basement, just get a shovel and get to work. Then I need to let her know when I am ready for the house. I will need 6 pieces of plywood and 6 2 X 4's. She is going to get me a fancy blue print made up so I will know exactly how to connect the plywood. She also said that a tarp is optional. And the best news is that she will do all that AND even give me some color schemes for the outside all for her low price of only $1,000. I hope she gets this outside plans done soon because I am anxious to get going on the interior design also. I will keep you posted as the pictures come. Oh and Jeff says that he will find some property for me to put my house on. For some reason, I'm guessing that the property would have Jeff's name on it. So much help. (I wonder where they will be when I start packing boxes).

Now here are a few pictures of my adventures in Utah.

This is Rachel just after surgery. They had just got her in her room. I can't believe how good she looks, even though it is not a very flattering photo. Sorry Rachel. You weren't into posing yet.

This is the day after surgery. Rachel wanted to check out what Becky had put on the blog about her and check out her photos. Once again, she just wasn't acting sick enough.

This is Rachel the 1st day after surgey. The real question was what was she doing in the bathroom-----she had a catheter in her and the other end had no clue what it was supposed to do but she just wanted to go sit for a few minutes, so we let her.

Then I decided to give Rachel a short break and I went and visited mom. I was going to get a pic of dad too, but forgot. Next time. Mom is walking around with a walker quite a bit. Her leg is still very sore to put weight on, but she says that it is getting better slowly.

This is Jami on the other side of the bed. She was at Huntsman for a dr app't and stopped to see Rachel. This is day 4 for Rachel.

And this is just proof that I really was there.

And Becky and James and Anna came to visit.

Anna helped Aunt Rachel with her lunch so the nurses would think that Rachel was eating. Anna chose the green jello. Rachel was never going near the hospital jello. I think that if eating the jello was a pre-requisite for getting out of the hospital, Rachel would still be there, unless............ Anna could help her out

End of a Streak

OH, No. They lost!!!
It's only fair that if I gloat on the good times that I also must stand accountable for the downfalls also. My Aggies lost last night to Boise (at least it wasn't Reno). They didn't play good at all and certainly didn't deserve a win. In the last couple of minutes they tried to come back but they either missed their shots or turned the ball over (sometimes both). BUT now this woke them up and they are ready to finish the season strong and storm through the WAC tournament and on to the NCAA tourney.
Sorry for those of you who couldn't care less about the Aggies (I can't believe that could be anyone) but some of you were just expecting news on my little boys and maybe some pics. I do have some pics from my trip to Utah that I will try to get on here tonight.

So where IS grandma?

I thought I'd better give a quick update before I am so far behind that I can't remember what is going on. I am in Utah. I arrived at Becky's Wed night. I spent Thur with Derrik while Rachel had surgery. The surgery went well and she is recovering steadily. Fri I was with Rachel while Derrik went to work. Sat I visited with Trish for a bit on my way to the USU basketball game. I did detour to visit Mom and Dad for a few minutes before the game. My escort picked me up and we were off to our pre-game activity. Amy Petersen took me to the ag chili cook-off. Then off to the game
I have to go now. Jami just arrived at Rachel's room. I will continue later.

GGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
I just attempted to add to this post and post it and...............................I lost it. I am soooo bummed. I can never remember what I wrote and it will never be as good as last time. But I will give it my best attempt.

Back to the important part--------the USU basketball game. So Amy and I went to the game and of course the Aggies won. They are now ranked 17th in the nation. They have the nation's longest home winning streak, I believe it is 31 games and they have an 18 game winning streak overall (the longest in the nation) and tied with Oklahoma for the most wins in the nation at 23 wins 1 loss. I must make note that the Aggies beat the Nevada Wolf Pack once this season and they are so ready to do it again. That is if Reno will have enough courage to show up for the game. Love ya Lance, just sorry that your boys can't keep up with my boys on the hardwood.
And that is all the sports report that you need. Go Aggies!!!

So I visited with my parents Sun afternoon then stopped by to visit Jami for a bit before heading back to Becky's. I'm so grateful that Becky and Todd can tolerate weird Aunt Marilyn and let me stay with them. And they don't get mad at me for keeping them up to late at night. I know they will be so happy when I am gone so they can work on the sleep depravation that I am creating.

There is some talk that Rachel may go home Wed. Depending on Rachel and the weather, I am hoping to go home tomorrow or at least say good bye to Rachel tomorrow and go at least to Tremonton tomorrow.

Rachel's room has a fantastic view of the valley. I sat here just a bit ago and watched ominous, dark clouds totally roll across the valley in a matter of a few minutes. And then it started to snow. Rachel made the BIG move out of her bed and to the chair so she could watch it snow. Yep. Within minutes, the snow had stopped and the skies were clearing up. She was so disappointed.

Thanks

I have been home for 6 days so it is getting time for me to be going someplace. I am going to Utah tomorrow to give moral support to Derrik during Rachel's surgery and then some support to Rachel afterwards. And it will give me an opportunity to visit mom and dad and Jami and whoever else I can.

I just want to make a note of what an awesome family I have. Yes, we are strange and on a good day, probably borderline disfunctional but when times get tough, everyone sure seems to rally around and help the others out. I want to thank everyone who has and is helping Rachel out. That is especially nice since she is deserting us and moving east. I just want to let you know that I have been touched by many acts of kindness.
